CorteXR
CorteXR is an NHS-backed VR rehabilitation platform for Meta Quest, helping stroke and FND patients rebuild independence through immersive therapy. As a core developer at Nudge Reality, I designed and built major gameplay and simulation systems, from daily-life scenarios to advanced interaction mechanics. It's one of the most technically demanding and personally meaningful projects I've worked on.
The problem
Stroke and FND patients face months of repetitive, low-engagement physiotherapy. Clinician time is scarce, motivation drops off quickly, and traditional rehab tools offer little feedback. Nudge Reality needed a VR platform that made daily rehabilitation intrinsically motivating without sacrificing clinical rigour.
My role
Core gameplay engineer at Nudge Reality (2023-2025). Responsible for gameplay systems, interaction mechanics, scenario design, and performance optimisation across the full product lifecycle.
Outcome
Shipped a clinically trialled VR rehabilitation platform now in active NHS use. A whack-a-mole minigame I designed and built drove patient engagement up by ~20% (±5%). Represented the company at an NHS FND medical trial in person.
Patients train with realistic virtual scenarios that mirror daily life tasks. I designed and built these from the ground up to be engaging, safe, and effective, helping patients feel more confident tackling real-world activities.
I reworked the core interaction systems to be intuitive and frustration-free. From new teleportation mechanics to smart object resets and clear visual hints, everything was designed to feel smooth and approachable.
