AR Storybook
An AR storybook app for Android and iOS, built as a group project under Jada Productions. I led the technical implementation and co-designed the experience. My main contribution was making AR tracking work reliably using the page illustrations as natural image targets, with no printed markers, keeping the experience seamless for young readers.
The problem
Traditional storybooks for young children offer no interactivity. Jada Productions wanted to create an AR experience that brought fairy tales to life without requiring printed markers or special equipment beyond a phone.
My role
Led all technical implementation. Responsible for AR tracking architecture, Vuforia natural image target setup, DMX integration for real-world lighting SFX, and C# programming throughout.
Outcome
Shipped on Android and iOS. Natural image tracking using page illustrations worked reliably across varied lighting conditions. The DMX integration enabled synchronised real-world light effects, making the experience genuinely multi-sensory.
Stylised environments with particle effects and real-time lighting that activate when the camera detects a page. The AR content is layered directly on top of the physical book.
This project aims to revolutionize the way children engage with books by introducing an innovative AR framework. By leveraging the latest technology, the project aims to create a more interactive and immersive reading experience that will inspire and motivate children to read more. The use of AR helps to bring the stories to life and encourages children to fully immerse themselves in the narrative, fostering a deeper love of reading and a greater appreciation for literature.
